Cleft lip and/or palate is one of the most common congenital abnormalies. And we experience clinically associated anomalies with cleft lip and/or palate most often. For cleft lip and/or palate patients, early finding and early treatment of associated anomalies is very important. A clinico-statistical investigation of the associated congenital anomalies was made on 1456 patients with cleft lip and/or palate who were in Clinics for Maxillo-Oral Disorders, Tohoku University Dental Hospital from January, 1987 to December, 2002.
The following results were obtained.
1. The patients were 761 males and 695 females. Cleft morphology was classified as follows: CL in 437 cases, CLP in 613 cases, CP in 329 cases, SMCP in 72 cases, MC in 5 cases.
2. The associated anomalies were observed in 170 patients, which was a 11.7% incidence rate.
3. Among the associated anomalies, congenital heart disease was the most often observed, followed by extremity malformation, ear malformation, digestive system anomalies and cell(chromosome) anomalies.
4. Congenital heart disease was observed in 50 patients, which was a 3.4% incidence rate. VSD was the most often observed.
5. Extremity malformation was observed in 46 patients, which was a 3.2% incidence rate. Dislocations of hips was the most often observed.
6. Ear malformation was observed in 26 patients, which was a 1.8% incidence rate. Hearing difficulty that is caused by ear anomaly was the most often observed.
7. Digestive system anomaly was observed in 24 patients, which was a 1.6% incidence rate. Hiatal hernia was the most often observed.
8. Of 15 cases were diagnosed as a syndrome, Down? syndrome was observed in 3 cases and Pirre-Robin syndrome in 2, Orofacial digital syndrome in 2.
9. Medication within 1st trimester was observed in 168 patients, which was a 11.5% incidence rate. Out of the 170 associated anomalies patients, 25 patients(14.7%) were found to be medicated patients. Out of the 1286 non-associated anomalies patients, 143 patients(11.1%) were found to be medicated patients. The most common used medicine was antiabortifacient.
